Berks Jazz Jam - Blog #1

by Mike Eben 2. March 2009 03:16
Hello, and welcome to the first “official” Berks Jazz Jam blog!  This is my first time doing a blog – I’m not even sure what a blog is just yet, so be patient with me!

We’ve been running the jam sessions at Zeswitz Music for over two years now, and got 2009 off to a great start with guest artist Pete Souders and his terrific band featuring Sid Simmons on piano, Mike Boone on bass, and Leon Jordan, Sr. on the drums.  It was very cool starting the new year with some of Philly’s finest!

Guitarist Pete Rogosky joined us for our February jam (on 2/11), with Keith Mohler on bass and John Fundyga on drums.  Pete is well know in jazz and rock circles around the Reading area, and has played with just about everybody!  He is currently playing guitar for the popular R&B group The Dance Hall Docs, who were recently featured at Gerald Veasley’s Jazz Base in Reading.

Look for music educator Carl Zeplin and company for our jam on March 11, Music In Our Schools month.  Carl and his band of educators will help us get ready for the Berks Jazz Fest coming up at the end of the month!

We encourage all musicians, young and old, to join us on the second Wednesday of every month at Zeswitz Music, for our jazz jam sessions.  Come out and learn the “old school” way to play jazz – listening to and performing with the pros themselves!

I hope this is just the first of many blogs to come.  Keep playing, keep practicing, and keep listening to America’s music – JAZZ !
See you!
Mike

Something about the author

Mike Eben is a saxophonist and music educator from Berks County.  He received a B.S. in Music Education from Lebanon Valley College in 1976.  He is a teacher in the Muhlenberg School District, where he directs the middle school concert band and jazz band, and one of two high school jazz bands.

Mr. Eben spent two years as jazz coordinator for the Music Educators of Berks County (MEBC), and finished his third term as president of that organization in 2007.

In November of 2006, with the cooperation of the Reading Music Foundation and Zeswitz Music, Mike began hosting the Jazz Jam at Zeswitz Music, a monthly jam session for student musicians.  The jam features professional musicians and educators from Berks County and beyond, performing with and giving advice to budding jazz artists.

Mike plays saxophone in several bands, including the rock bands Been There/Done That from West Chester, and The “Fabulous” Peptones from Philadelphia.  In addition, Mike fronts his own jazz group, From the Hip.  He has also performed with several other area jazz groups, including The Last Big Band and Hesse’s Nasty Nine, as well as many area rock bands.

In March of 2008, during the Berks Jazz Fest, Mike was presented with the Frank Scott Award, given to a member of the music community who works to promote jazz in the Berks County area.  The award is named for tenor saxophonist Frank Scott, a well-known jazz and blues musician from Reading, Pa.
